Consumer groups call for injury data collection

Two major European consumer representative bodies, BEUC and ANEC, have welcomed the European Commission’s (EC) proposal for an updated consumer product safety regulation but call for additional controls on online marketplaces and the establishment of a pan-European system for accident and injury data collection coordinated by the EC.
In a recently published Position Paper the consumer groups stress that the database should cover all types of injuries involving consumer products, and that data should be proactively collected, analysed and evaluated in cooperation with hospitals across the EU, so that product design, safety legislation, technical standardisation and consumer information on safe use improve over time based on this evidence.
