This year, the joint seminar will look into the use of injury data for effective and innovative safety promotion”. The seminar will be held in the Austria Center, the main congress centre in Vienna, Wednesday 9 November 2016, and is being organised in collaboration with the European Public Health Association (EUPHA) and the BRIDGE-Health project.

The programme offers ample opportunities for short paper and poster presentations. The organisers are in particular interested to receive abstracts that demonstrate:

- innovative approaches in collecting injury data collection in a cost efficient manner;

- value of injury data in setting national or local priorities for action;

- use of injury data in designing intervention programmes and safety promotion campaigns.

Your proposal, i.e. an abstract (400-500 words), should be sent to secretariat@eurosafe.eu.com  before June 1, 2016. Confirmation of acceptance of your abstract for short paper or poster presentation will be sent out by July 1, 2016.

Scope and purpose

Reliable injury data are essential for making informed decisions about accident prevention priorities and in developing effective safety promotion initiatives. They are critical in harnessing political will, public support and the funding needed to undertake actions. Injury data are also required to evaluate the success and the cost-effectiveness of these actions.

Emergency Departments (EDs) of hospitals have proven to be the most valuable source of injury data, beside death certificates. EDs allow for the collection of data in sufficient number and sufficient depths.

Although great progress has been made in the past years regarding data quality, comparability, availability and accessibility, many challenges still remain.

The aim of our Seminar and pre-conference to the EUPHA-Conference, is to demonstrate the value of ED-based injury information both for health initiated policies and actions. The seminar will showcase local and national level initiatives that are geared by injury data.

Programme

Topics that will be addressed include:

  • Use of injury data in priority areas such as promoting safety of consumer products and services, developing effective child safety interventions an measuring the severity of injuries on European roads;
  • Showcase presentations on how injury data drives prevention policies in communities and regions;
  • Innovation and new technologies for data mining, data linkage and comprehensive integration of injury-relevant information in health services administrations.
