The number of child violence related deaths in the European Union is unacceptably high. Co-ordinated prevention and control efforts are urgently needed.
The following strategies should be implemented:
Legislation
- For the European Commission to adopt and strengthen legislative measures to restrict access to firearms, especially handguns by requiring guns to be stored under lock, unloaded and ammunition stored separately under lock.
- For Member States to mandate having modules on violence prevention integrated into the training of medical, nursing, and public health students.
EU Collaboration
- For the European Commission to implement a European Firearm Injury Surveillance System to collect and monitor data about fatal and nonfatal firearm related injuries, patterns of firearm ownership and use, and specific information on the models and types of firearms used in homicides, suicides, and unintentional injuries.
- For the European Commission to support a European network to share information and resources on child violence prevention research and programs.
- For Member States to create, implement and monitor a European action plan for violence prevention based on a consensus developed by a wide range of governmental and nongovernmental organisations throughout Europe.
- For Member States to define priorities for and support research to better understand the causes, consequences, costs and prevention of violence.
- For the European Commission and Member States to support implementation of interventions and policies that reduce the risk of exposure to violence and promote non-violence.
