Prevention Effectiveness  print friendly

  • Legislation on firearms - Australian firearm-related deaths decreased by 50% in the past 10 years due to tougher gun laws that target military-style weapons, increased import controls and restrict access to handguns.

  • Injury prevention programs - programs incorporating active learning approaches such as modeling, rehearsal, and feedback was effective in teaching children firearm injury prevention skills. A role play of a real-life situation where children were to learn to say no to playing with a gun was found to be a crucial component for success.

  • Early education programs – educational programmes targeting high-risk children by helping to have success in school were shown to decrease subsequent development of violent behaviour in the long term.

  • Firearm safety devices – the use of one firearm safety device such as personalisation devices, loaded chamber indicators or magazine safeties by gun owners would reduce firearm-related injuries in children 0 to 17 years of age by 88%, specifically when children are playing with or showing a handgun to others.

  • Restrict access to firearms – The 4 practices of keeping a gun locked, unloaded, storing ammunition locked, and in a separate location are each associated with a protective effect to reduce firearm injuries in homes with children and teenagers where guns are stored.

  • Parent and family-based interventions – home visitations by a professional, parent skills training, and family therapy are interventions that show promise for producing long-term reductions in youth violence.

  • Political and financial commitment – the World Health Organization states that the engagement of governments and stakeholders at the local, national and international level is crucial to the success of any programme to prevent violence, in order to ensure proper funding and effective legislation, and also to give prevention efforts increased legitimacy and a higher profile in society.
