Draft report on Quantifying post-injury levels of functioning and disability: why and how? (2005)
Disabilities (i.e. reduced levels of functioning resulting from diseases or injuries) are increasingly seen as an important component of a population’s health. Information on the frequency, severity and duration of disabilities is necessary to estimate the ‘burden of injury’ and to assess the (cost-) effectiveness of injury prevention and trauma care with the help of composite health outcome measures, such as Quality Adjusted Life Years (QALYs) and Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs).This report includes an overview of the theoretical background of the issue, including guidelines for collecting empirical data.
