From 2007 onwards the IDB will also contain data on non-fatal injuries in other sectors (traffic, work place, violence and self-harm) with a focus on vulnerable groups and settings of high risks, in order to serve also the needs of the public health sector and the Community health information system. An evidence-base for consumer product and service related accidents in the common market with a user-friendly interface to access the comprehensive information on accident and injures stored in the database shall be provided.
Data are collected in national samples of hospitals (Accidents and Emergency departments) in a harmonized way (according to EU guidelines, the IDB coding manual). Not all Member States have yet implemented this data collection system. In contrary to the U.S. owned NEISS, the European IDB is a system, to which the Member States voluntarily contribute, and where the ownership of data remains with the national data administrators.
The EuroSafe programme gives assistance to Member Statesto help with the set-up, maintenance and use of the system on national level.
