Up till now the EuroSafe data programme has concentrated on the development of the European Injury database IDB.
The IDB is a database on non-fatal home, leisure and sports accidents. Its unique feature is information about external causes and other circumstances like environments, activities, products and services involved. In Europe, there is no other data source where you can find this kind of information, which is indispensable for targeted preventive action. The IDB is fed by a network of National Data Administrators (NDA) in the Member States of the European Union, in EEA countries as well as candidate countries.
The data collection was established many years ago, originally to serve the needs of the administration of the Product Safety Directive in the Common Market (European Home and Leisure Accidents Surveillance System EHLASS). Since 1999 data are stored in a database that was made publicly accessible in 2006 (European Injury Data Base IDB). In principle this system aims to provide similar services like the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System NEISS in the USA.
