International workshop on Media and Tool development” took place in Vienna, Palais Strudlhof. 34 Experts from 12 European countries working in fields of research, prevention, health promotion for young people participated in the meeting. The Workshop was organized by the Austrian Road Safety Board (KfV, project leader) and the Consumer Safety Institute (CSI), Netherlands.
Results and conclusions
Four topics were judged as the most important ones: The development of a curriculum for implementation of risk competence training at school was considered to be a priority.
Risk competence development should be integrated as well in physical Education at school, but also as part of a general learning approach in other areas on a regular level. There should also be an integration of this topic in work safety in occupational schools. An urgent need was stated: to get specific approaches to communicate and reach young people.
Participants stated that this workshop provided an important contribution on how to communicate with youth on risk and injury prevention. A majority of participants stated that the tools and methods proposed at the workshop are relevant and transferable for their work.
The possibility for exchange on this topic was highly appreciated by the experts and it was favoured that exchanges on this topic could take place regularly. The development of network on this specific topic was initiated

International Workshop on Media and Tool Development
Preventing Injuries: National Campaign development on risk taking behaviour in adolescents
7-8 April 2008, Vienna Austria
The aim of the Workshop, organised in the framework of the European co-financed project “Community Action on Adolescents and injury Risk: AdRisk”, was to initiate support for national policy and action for campaigning risk behaviour among adolescents in the European member states. The workshop was part of the AdRisk promotion activities for the “Toolbox for youth and risk campaigning ”.
The Workshop presented and reviewed innovative tools and media (i.e using videos of www.youtube.com, a webgame, a MTV/TMF tv programme and the development of teachers materials). A constructive discussion among researchers, communication experts of Health Institutions and Road Safety Organizations and associated beneficiaries from the AdRisk project haas been initiated. We aim at creating awareness and positive attitude among adolescents through educational measures like a multi media strategy.
The invitation flyer is available here.
Toolbox
The AdRisk project focuses primarily on raising awareness of the issue among the relevant authorities, NGO's and interest groups and on empowering these stakeholders by providing them tools in developing an adequate response to the injury challenge by designing national programs for prevention and promotional activities. One of the deliverables of the project is a toolbox on how to develop a national program. The authorities, NGO's and interest groups of all Member States can use the toolbox. They can make use of the instruments, methods and activities developed by others and transfer them to the situation in their own country. The toolbox will be very user friendly offering a selection of campaign materials and projects to choose from (different settings, different types of tools, different users, etc.). And in doing so the toolbox will inspire users and provide them with ideas for action plans. The toolbox is being developed and will be available in the summer of 2008.
