Risk Assessment  print friendly

The EuroSafe Working Group on Risk Assessment was set up in 2005 to provide a knowledge base for others who aim at producing practical methods of risk assessment.

Specific aims are:

    • The WG will make an inventory of the principles underlying risk assessment, in particular for product design and post market monitoring.
    • On the basis of this inventory, guidelines will be developed for producers, enforcers and consumer organisations on how to apply these principles in practice and what type of information can be used in each step. This may include examples of tools such as risk matrices.
    • The deliverable should be a guidance document containing the main definitions and framework for risk assessment of non-food consumer products, and a proposal for dedicated research projects aimed at filling the gaps in knowledge.
    • Risk-assessment flowchart and website.
Risk assessment for non-food consumer products is an increasingly important tool for risk managers in determining whether regulatory interventions or other measures are required to ensure the safety of products and services to consumers.

At the EuroSafe Risk Assessment Conference held in Edinburgh, 21/22 April 2005, it was recognised that there is a need for more consistent and objective risk assessment. It is therefore important to develop a sound scientific basis for this field. At the close of this conference EuroSafe committed itself to using this conference as a platform for the development of further activities that must encourage more harmonised approaches towards risk assessment and to increase transparency in assessment procedures and consequent decision making processes.
