The world of sports and the promotion of physical activity is most diverse. It includes activities and exercises for pre-school children, physical education at school, organised activities in sports clubs, individually organised leisure time activities and exercises for the elderly.
Taking into account the different categories and types of sports, the EuroSafe Sport Safety Task Force gives priority to those categories of sports and/or physical activities that present the highest risks in terms of number of injuries and average severity of injury, while taking also into consideration rising trends in incidence, existing support level (interest among stakeholders) and feasibility of implementation.
For the mid term period, the Sport Safety Task Force will focus on:
- Safety in team sports. A project has been launched that focuses on the most popular team sports and ball games, starting with handball and basketball sports.
- Safety in snow sports, Activities have been initiated to identify main injury risks in skiing and snow boarding and to provide examples of good practices in prevention, for instance by promoting ski helmet wearing.
- 'Sports for all' or 'sports for health' - types of physical activities, wherein often inexperienced, novice participants are involved with a higher injury risk, i.e. young and older people. This heightened injury risk among these age groups often offsets to a significant extent the health benefits of healthy activities.
