EuroSafe admitted into official relations with WHO

At the 120th session of the World Health Organization’s Executive Board, held in January 2007, EuroSafe has been admitted into official relations with WHO.

A mutually agreed three-year plan for collaboration is the basis of an official relationship between an NGO and WHO. The objectives of WHO’s collaboration with NGOs are to:

  • promote the policies, strategies and programmes derived from the decisions of the Organization’s governing bodies;
  • collaborate on jointly agreed activities to implement these strategies; and to
  • play an appropriate role in ensuring the harmonising of intersectoral interests among the various sectoral bodies concerned in a country, regional or global setting.

A more detailed plan of work, jointly established between WHO and EuroSafe, provides the basis for the collaboration between both organisations for the years 2007-2010. By 2010 the following results are expected:

  • Improved national surveillance and capacity in Europe to better understand the burden of injuries.
  • Increased number of Member States have national plans for preventing unintentional injury and violence. This includes new initiatives for legislation, safety standards and regulations, and enhanced enforcement.
  • Injury prevention is being integrated stronger into different departmental policies so as to capitalize on working in different institutional settings.
  • Strengthened national capacity to respond to the burden of injuries, both for primary prevention and for care.
  • More efficient dissemination of knowledge and experience across regions and countries and promotion of good practices.
  • Collaborative research and development in primary prevention and into cost-effectiveness of measures.

In order to achieve these objectives and outcomes the following four activities will be jointly engaged in:

1. Assistance to the WHO-HQ in the development of the World Report on Child and Adolescent Injuries, through providing guidance and information on good practices in injury prevention as identified globally. This should result into:

  • latest state of art information to be included in World Report
  • production of leaflets based on world report targeted to distinct audiences and stakeholders
  • assistance in launch events for the WHO Report and dissemination of information
  • assistance to member states in implementing the World report (2008 onwards)

2. Development of a database on good practices in injury prevention, starting with practices related to child safety that will be accessible to the public. This will result into:

  • a publicly accessible data base
  • fact sheets highlighting topical issues
  • training course in transfer of good practices

3. Advocacy and capacity building for injury prevention at European and global events and contribution to capacity building. Activities in this domain will lead to:

  • website on injury data, good practices and topical issues (fact sheets on injury prevention in collaboration with WHO-Euro)
  • annual training seminars in collaboration with WHO-Euro
  • bi-annual European Conferences on injury prevention in collaboration with WHO HQ and European Region
  • quarterly newsletters especially targeting injury prevention practitioners in Europe as well as globally

4. Contributions to WHO-strategy development and planning related to emerging priority issues such as injuries among senior persons and leisure time related injuries. Activities in this respect will include:

  • input to Global strategy on VIP
  • assistance in implementing strategy
  • extension of collaborating activities among NGO’s such as in the framework of the recently created International Society for Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion (member in board of directors)

EuroSafe looks forward to strengthening its collaboration with WHO in the coming years.
