Access to accident and injury data is indispensable for an effective deployment of injury prevention and safety promotion policies within the EU. Therefore, the EuroSafe-injury data programme serves a vital function by providing stakeholders of injury prevention with relevant data on accidents and injuries in the EU.
In policy areas where the need for injury information have arisen long ago, specific surveillance systems have been set up. Data on occupational accidents is now exchanged at EU level through the agreement on European Statistics on Accidents at Work ESAW, as is the case for road traffic injuries through the Community database on Accidents on the Roads in Europe CARE.
As to home and leisure injuries many countries are lacking a robust infrastructure for data collection and exchange at European level. Over the past few years a series of projects have been initiated by EuroSafe with the support of the European Commission to improve national infrastructures and enhance injury data collection, in particular at accident and emergency departments at hospitals.
This led to the creation of European Injury Data BaseIDB.
International Classification of External Causes of Injuries ICECI a complementary classification related to the WHO-ICD-10 classification.
