Maclaren buggies injury risk  print friendly

11/17/2009 Maclaren offers safety device to European consumers.

Days after a U.S. recall of Maclaren folding buggies sparked worry in Europe over their safety, Maclaren Global is now offering any consumer who owns a Maclaren folding buggy a free device to prevent further injuries. Consumers are asked to call or email Maclaren to place a request. The device is a cloth covering that clips over the potentially dangerous hinge.

In the United States the alert was due to 12 cases in which children had parts of their fingers amputated by catching their fingers in the buggy while it was being folded.  Maclaren initially refused to offer the safety device to consumers in Europe, arguing that the buggies met all safety tests and standard requirements of EN 1888,  and cited only 1 reported injury (in the UK).  Consumer pressure led Maclaren to reverse their position and offer the kits not just in the United States, but in Europe as well.

The models for which the safety device is available include: Volvo, Triumph, Quest Sport, Quest Mod, Techno XT, Techno XLR, Twin Triumph, Twin Techno and Easy Traveller.

The Global website for Maclaren is: www.maclarenbaby.com
