The goal of this research project was to determine if a method used for estimating product safety was also suitable for assessing the risk of situations. This was accomplished by using the method to assess the risks of three situations: A neighborhood pond around which children played; glazing in the lobby of a building; and children playing on a playground.

The results showed that the methods were applicable but only to a limited extent.
They were suited for establishing and understanding danger, but could not offer absolute calculations for determining the probability of accidents. However, results showed it possible to make an overview of foreseeable accidents by adding a danger factor to descriptions of contact groups and user and environmental factors. To this extent, there is an overlap between product and situation risk assessment.Special attention is paid to the essential differences between situations and products when assessing risk, including the importance of detailed descriptions when working in a group.
