The Consumer Safety Institute together with a group of European experts carried out the project 'Developing Minimum Data Sets for Injury Surveillance in the European Union', commissioned by the European Commission as part of the Injury Prevention Programme. (Bloemhoff et al, 2001). The objective of this project was to develop sets of data elements (with their corresponding values or coding schemes) minimally necessary for monitoring injuries in yet a meaningful way, to be used in settings with limited resources and/or settings which start collecting injury data. On the other hand, these sets of data elements should be suitable as a reporting format for comparing injury data in general, including data from well resourced Member States and/or settings.

This report describes the actual contents of the final MDS-Is.
